From Back Office to Strategic Powerhouse: The 2026 Post-Trade Mandate

Settlement failures have cost the industry roughly US$914.7 billion in a decade. For sell-side firms across APAC, the UK and the Middle East, post-trade has stopped being a cost centre – it is now the line item that decides how much of your capital is working and how much is stuck.

The short version

The settlement cycle shortened. Your operating model did not.

The US and Canada moved to T+1 in May 2024. India opened optional T+0 to its top 500 stocks. The UK and Europe are next. Every market you clear in now runs on a different clock, and a batch-oriented back office cannot hold more than one at a time.

What the report finds

Four things that changed the economics of your back office.

01

Speed is now a commercial product, not a compliance tick-box

Intraday allocation, same-day affirmation and rapid exception triage lower collateral costs and free capital sooner. Clients and counterparties are already choosing brokers on settlement reliability. Operational performance has become part of the pitch.

Business impact - capital efficiency you can quote to a client

02

Fragmentation is permanent, so the platform has to be configurable

Some markets sit on T+2, one is piloting T+0, the UK and Europe are moving to T+1 on their own timetable. A firm operating across APAC, London and the Gulf needs parallel cycles, cut-offs and rulebooks running side by side, as configuration, not as code branches.

Business impact - every new market becomes a switch, not a project

03

Data hygiene is the highest-return fix available

Stale SSIs and mismatched PSET codes remain the leading cause of fails. A canonical settlement-data registry with real-time validation at trade capture cuts fail rates faster and cheaper than any other intervention on the list.

Business impact - fastest ROI in the whole programme

04

Prevention has replaced remediation

Straight-through processing was the last decade's target. The current one is predicting which trades will fail, triaging exceptions automatically and triggering a borrow or a pre-position before settlement date not, chasing a break the morning after.

Business impact - fails avoided rather than funded

Regional pressure

The same mandate. Three different clocks.

What the 2026 mandate means for a sell-side firm depending on where it clears.

APAC

Fastest cycles, widest divergence

India has already run same-day settlement on 500 stocks, then extended the broker deadline when custodians could not keep pace. Elsewhere in the region cycles, cut-offs and depository conventions differ market by market, with no common timetable.

The pressure point: multi-market processing on one platform — the region will not standardise for you.

United Kingdom

A dated transition with no room to slip

The United Kingdom has a committed T+1 timetable and a supervisor focused on operational resilience. Large custodians are already spending tens of millions on readiness. Firms that arrive late will meet both a fail-rate problem and a conduct question.

The pressure point: demonstrable readiness — evidence, testing and vendor SLAs, not intent.

Middle East

Building new, with the chance to skip a generation

Gulf markets are scaling quickly and adding infrastructure without three decades of legacy underneath it. The choice is whether to import the batch architecture the rest of the industry is now paying to unwind.

The pressure point: architecture chosen now sets the cost base for the next decade.

The playbook

A 24-month transformation, in three phases.

Tactical fixes first, architecture second. Sequenced so each phase funds the next.

Phase 01 · 0–3 months

Find out what is actually failing

Phase 02 · 3–12 months

Automate the exception, not the report

Phase 03 · 12–24 months

Replace the batch with an event stream
